[Korea Financial Times, Jung Jina] The United States is overwhelmingly the world's No. 1 defense market. With a defense budget exceeding USD 1 trillion, it is often referred to in Korea as the "trillion-jo nation" (cheonjoguk), a nickname reflecting the sheer scale of its defense spending measured in Korean won terms. Hanwha Aerospace is expanding its business footprint in the US, the home turf of the global defense industry.

The company has established Hanwha Horizon USA, an entity dedicated to liquefied natural gas (LNG) procurement, trading and logistics, and is also pursuing the construction of an ammunition production facility in Arkansas.

Behind a defense company's expansion into the energy business lies growing demand from global customers seeking package deals that combine weapons systems with energy supply.

Securing Competitiveness by Building an LNG Value Chain

Hanwha Horizon USA is a subsidiary directly funded by Hanwha Aerospace. It will serve as the control tower overseeing LNG procurement, trading and logistics optimization. Its inaugural CEO is James Sagar, who also heads Hanwha Shipping, a shipping joint venture in which Hanwha Aerospace and Hanwha Ocean each hold a 50% stake. Sagar has more than 30 years of experience in the maritime and energy sectors.

Hanwha Aerospace's strategy is to build an energy value chain spanning LNG transport, supply and power generation centered on Hanwha Horizon USA, thereby securing global business competitiveness.

Its first customer will be Hanwha Energy's Yeosu LNG power plant, set to begin commercial operation in 2029, after which supply will expand to other domestic and overseas power generators and energy companies. Over the medium to long term, the company also plans to fully launch an LNG trading business across Asia and other global markets.

Capturing Energy Demand Beyond Weapons

The recent trend in the global defense market is shifting away from simple weapons systems transactions toward a structure in which the fuel and energy needed to operate those weapons are supplied together.

Hanwha Aerospace is a defense company that has manufactured the K9 self-propelled howitzer and the Chunmoo multiple rocket launcher. Its recent investment in the LNG-related entity is seen as a move to strengthen competitiveness by building out an energy value chain to meet customer needs in line with this global trend.

Poland, Estonia and other countries to which Hanwha has exported the K9 and Chunmoo are nations grappling with energy security anxieties stemming from Russia. By employing an integrated package sales strategy spanning energy and defense, the company can broaden its partnerships by adding energy cooperation to weapons export contracts.

Regarding the establishment of the new entity, Hanwha Aerospace said, "Based on a stable LNG supply network, we will be able to build integrated security partnerships spanning energy and defense with our customer countries."

Expanding Existing Businesses Including Ammunition and Shipbuilding

Since Hanwha Shipping — the joint venture in which Hanwha Ocean also holds a 50% stake — already exists in the US, vertical integration with the shipbuilding sector is also possible. With Hanwha Ocean building LNG carriers, if the group directly operates an LNG business, it can generate carrier-order demand internally.

Separately from its LNG business, Hanwha Aerospace is also expanding its defense business in the US. Hanwha Defense USA is building a facility at the Pine Bluff Arsenal in Arkansas to produce propellant for 155mm artillery shells and Modular Charge System (MCS) increments. The US Army describes this as "a facility that produces key raw materials for explosives and propellants."

Hanwha Defense USA, the US subsidiary of Hanwha Defense — itself a wholly owned subsidiary of Hanwha Aerospace — was established in 2021. MCS production in Arkansas is expected to begin in early 2029, representing a separate defense expansion project aimed at building up ammunition production capacity within the US.

A Hanwha Aerospace official said, "We judged that the energy business is a sector that can create synergy with our existing defense business, and this is part of an expansion of integrated packages spanning energy and defense." The official added, "The establishment of this entity is one of our new investments in shipbuilding, marine and energy."
