LS Electric Chairman Koo Ja-kyun, who is leading the company's push into the U.S. power equipment market, has drawn attention by emphasizing local investment and support initiatives grounded in unwavering Korea-U.S. trust.
According to LS Electric, Chairman Koo said, "The foundation that allows us to firmly root ourselves in the U.S. market today lies in the noble sacrifice of Utah's veterans, who shed blood and sweat for freedom and peace," adding, "Steadfast friendship and trust across generations can only be forged through unchanging, wholehearted sincerity."
Chairman Koo's renewed emphasis on Korea-U.S. trust stems from Utah's unique historical ties with Korea. During the Korean War in 1951, 240 soldiers of the Utah National Guard fought in Gapyeong, Gyeonggi Province, as part of the United Nations forces. When roughly 4,000 Chinese communist troops surged toward the Gapyeong area, the Utah National Guard repelled them without a single combat death — an episode now known as the "Miracle of Gapyeong."
Chairman Koo reportedly learned of the "Miracle of Gapyeong" while spearheading the company's full-scale entry into the U.S. power equipment market. In 2022, while searching for a key investment target through its U.S. sales subsidiary, LS Electric identified a small switchgear manufacturer, MCM Engineering II, located in Enoch, a small town in Iron County, Utah.
An LS Electric official said, "Chairman Koo personally directed the acquisition of MCM Engineering II and its large-scale capacity expansion in order to strengthen the company's push into the rapidly growing U.S. AI data market," adding, "In the process, he learned about the 'Miracle of Gapyeong' and was reportedly deeply moved by it."
Utah has, in fact, long been a focus of LS Electric's efforts, as the state has recently been accelerating its push to attract large-scale data centers powered by nuclear energy.
Box Elder County in northwestern Utah recently received approval for construction of "Stratos," a massive AI data center spanning roughly 16,187 hectares — about twice the size of Manhattan, New York. Its power consumption alone is estimated at approximately 9 gigawatts (GW), exceeding Utah's total electricity consumption. The same region is also set to host "Delta Gigasite," a 10 GW AI data center campus reported to be the largest of its kind in the world.
Adding to this momentum, Utah Governor Spencer Cox announced a key energy policy, "Operation Gigawatt," in 2024, aiming to expand the state's power generation capacity to roughly 20 GW within the next decade. An industry official said, "Utah is pursuing the most nuclear-friendly policies of any U.S. state," adding, "Utah itself has become a hub for the next generation of U.S. data center and nuclear power clusters."
LS Electric acquired a 100% stake in MCM Engineering II in 2022 for approximately USD 6.3 million, or roughly KRW 7.7 billion. The small company, which employed about 30 workers at the time of the acquisition, has grown over four years into LS Electric's core production hub in North America.
On June 25 (local time), LS Electric announced it would invest a total of KRW 250 billion in "LS Electric Utah" (formerly MCM Engineering II) to expand its production facilities by an additional 66,115 square meters, on top of the existing 13,223 square meters. This will bring total production space to 79,338 square meters — a sixfold increase.
The expansion is aimed at building high-end power solution production facilities in the U.S. and securing additional manufacturing capacity. Once the new plant is completed, annual switchgear production capacity will expand to approximately KRW 500 billion. Operations are targeted to begin in early 2027.
Switchgear is equipment that safely distributes electricity generated at power plants and substations to end users such as factories and buildings. It is considered essential equipment for facilities that require large, stable power supplies, such as data centers and semiconductor plants. MCM Engineering II, founded in 1995, has handled everything from switchgear system design to installation.
